Neck Pain in Marietta, GA.
There’s a Reason It Won’t Go Away.

Why your neck pain keeps returning, what’s actually behind it, and how corrective chiropractic care at United Chiropractic Center addresses the structural cause — not just the stiffness.

Dr. Steve Landry, DC · United Chiropractic Center · Marietta, GA · 9 min read

“I wake up stiff every morning. I stretch, I roll my shoulders, I take Advil. By noon it’s right back. I just want to turn my head without thinking about it.”

If that sounds familiar, you’re far from alone — and the answer is not another pillow or a better desk chair.

Every week, patients from Marietta, East Cobb, Smyrna, Kennesaw, and Roswell come to United Chiropractic Center with the same frustration: neck pain that never fully goes away. It shows up as stiffness in the morning, tension by mid-afternoon, sharp pain when turning to check a blind spot, or a dull ache that radiates into the shoulders and upper back.

This page is for everyone who has spent hundreds on massage appointments that feel great for a day and change nothing long-term. For the person who holds tension in their neck so constantly they’ve stopped noticing it. For the parent who can’t look down at their child without something catching. There is a reason this keeps happening — and it’s almost certainly not what you’ve been told.

What’s Actually Causing Your Neck Pain — And Why Stretching Isn’t Fixing It

Most people assume neck pain is a muscle problem. “I must have slept wrong.” “I carry my stress in my neck.” “I need to stretch more.”

And while muscle tension is part of the picture, it’s almost never the cause — it’s a symptom of something deeper.

Your cervical spine — the seven vertebrae in your neck — supports and protects the top of your spinal cord, which transmits every signal between your brain and your body. When those vertebrae shift out of alignment, they don’t just create stiffness. They create nerve interference that can affect your neck, shoulders, arms, head, and more.

Here’s what most people don’t realize: Your head weighs 10–12 pounds. For every inch it shifts forward — from looking at a phone, hunching over a laptop, or driving — the effective weight on your cervical spine doubles. Two inches forward? That’s 30+ pounds of constant force on vertebrae designed for 12. That’s not tension. That’s structural damage happening in slow motion.

The muscle tightness you feel is your body’s attempt to stabilize a spine that has shifted. It’s a compensation pattern, not the root cause.

Common structural causes of neck pain we see in Marietta every week:

01

Cervical misalignment (subluxation)

Vertebrae in the neck that have shifted out of proper alignment, compressing nerves and restricting normal range of motion. This is the most common — and most overlooked — cause of chronic neck pain.

02

Forward head posture (tech neck)

Hours of screen time pushes the head forward of the shoulders, flattening the natural cervical curve. Over months and years, the spine adapts to this abnormal position — and pain becomes the new normal.

03

Disc degeneration or bulging in the cervical spine

Misalignment accelerates disc wear. Cervical discs thin, bulge, or herniate, pressing on nerve roots and causing pain that radiates into the shoulder, arm, or hand. Related: Herniated Disc

04

Whiplash and trauma injuries

Car accidents, sports impacts, and falls can damage the ligaments and alignment of the cervical spine. Many people develop chronic neck pain months or years after the injury because the structural damage was never corrected. Related: Whiplash · Car Accident Care

05

Pinched nerves in the neck

Misaligned vertebrae or bulging discs can compress cervical nerve roots, causing sharp pain, numbness, or tingling that travels down the arm. This is often misdiagnosed as carpal tunnel or shoulder problems. Related: Pinched Nerve · Carpal Tunnel

06

Headaches and migraines from neck dysfunction

The upper cervical spine directly affects blood flow and nerve signaling to the head. Misalignment here is one of the most common structural causes of tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and migraines. Related: Headaches & Migraines

“If your neck has been tight for months or years, your body isn’t failing you. It’s compensating for a structural problem that hasn’t been addressed. Remove the structural cause and the body stops compensating.”

Why the Usual Approaches Only Provide Temporary Relief

If you’ve been dealing with neck pain for any length of time, you’ve probably tried some combination of these: Advil or Tylenol, heating pads, foam rollers, massage, maybe even a course of physical therapy or muscle relaxers from your doctor.

And here’s the truth — many of those can help you feel better temporarily. But none of them address why your neck hurts in the first place.

Pain medication blocks signals. It does not realign vertebrae. Massage loosens muscle tension. It does not correct forward head posture. Even physical therapy — which we value and sometimes recommend alongside care — focuses on strengthening muscles around the problem rather than correcting the structural misalignment underneath it.

Here’s a simple way to think about it: If a door keeps sticking because the frame is crooked, you can sand the door every week. Or you can straighten the frame. We straighten the frame.

This is why so many people describe neck pain as something that “comes and goes” or “flares up.” It’s not random. It’s a structural problem that was never corrected — and each flare-up is your body running out of ways to compensate.

How Corrective Chiropractic Care Addresses Neck Pain — At the Source

At United Chiropractic Center, we don’t chase symptoms. We don’t crack your neck and hope it holds. We use a corrective model — the same approach we’ve used with thousands of families in Marietta since 2011 — designed to identify, measure, and correct the structural cause of your neck pain.

Here’s what makes it different:

01

We identify the structural problem

Using postural X-rays and a Tytron nervous system scan, we pinpoint exactly where cervical misalignment exists and which nerves are being affected. No guessing. No assumptions.

02

We build a correction plan specific to your spine

Dr. Landry designs a care plan based on your imaging and scan results — not a cookie-cutter protocol. The goal is to restore proper cervical alignment and curve, reduce nerve interference, and give your body the structural foundation to heal.

03

We correct, not just relieve

Precise chiropractic adjustments restore vertebral position, take pressure off compressed discs and nerves, and allow the muscles that have been compensating to finally relax. Over time, the correction holds — and the pain stays gone.

04

We re-scan and re-measure to track progress

Your progress is tracked with objective data, not just how you feel on a given day. Re-scans and follow-up X-rays confirm that structural correction is happening — so you know it’s not just symptom relief, it’s real change.

Your First Visit — What to Expect

Walking into a new office when you’re already in pain can feel overwhelming. We’ve designed the new patient experience to be thorough, transparent, and completely pressure-free.

01

We sit down and listen

Dr. Landry spends real time hearing your story — when the pain started, what you’ve tried, how it affects your daily life. No rush, no clipboard hand-off, no assistants running the conversation.

02

Tytron nervous system scan

A painless, non-invasive scan that maps where stress and interference exist in your nervous system. This tells us what’s happening at a level you can’t see or feel on your own.

03

Postural X-rays and cervical spine assessment

We take detailed measurements of your cervical curve and spinal alignment. This is how we see exactly which vertebrae have shifted, how far, and what needs to happen to correct them.

04

A clear answer — not a sales pitch

You leave knowing what we found, what it means, and what a care plan looks like. If corrective care isn’t the right fit for your situation, Dr. Landry will tell you that directly.

Questions Marietta Patients Ask About Neck Pain

Can a chiropractor fix neck pain?

Yes. Corrective chiropractic care addresses the structural cause of neck pain — cervical misalignment and nerve interference — rather than masking symptoms with medication or muscle relaxers. Many patients experience significant relief within the first few weeks of care.

What causes chronic neck pain and stiffness?

Chronic neck pain is most commonly caused by cervical spine misalignment (subluxation), forward head posture from prolonged screen use, disc degeneration, whiplash from car accidents, and nerve compression. These are structural problems that require structural correction — not just symptom management.

Is it normal for neck pain to come and go?

It’s common, but it’s not normal. Pain that “comes and goes” typically means a structural problem exists but your body is temporarily able to compensate. Over time, the flare-ups get more frequent and more intense as the compensation fails. Corrective care breaks this cycle.

Can neck problems cause headaches?

Absolutely. Upper cervical misalignment is one of the most common structural causes of tension headaches, cervicogenic headaches, and migraines. Correcting the alignment often resolves the headaches at their source. Learn more: Headaches & Migraines

The staff always greets us by name and is so welcoming! They are flexible and fast with appointments. All of my family goes here and we are all feeling better. I had bursitis in my shoulder, which was relieved surprisingly quickly and my teenage daughter had complained of knee pain for years which she no longer complains about!
